If you’re getting tired of the usual boring cardio workouts, then enrolling in a fitness boot camp might just have the kick you’re looking for!

A fitness boot camp gets you back to basics with military-style exercises and functional movements like push-ups, squats, sprints, and sit-ups, and group activities, all of which provide a killer workout outside the typical gym setting. But before you sign-up in a hurry, here are 4 things you need to know to get the most out of your first boot camp experience:

  1. Get Positive! – Enter the boot camp with a positive, can-do attitude. No doubt, the workout will be challenging. But the most important thing is to keep yourself motivated throughout the day. The key is to keep your mind calm when your muscles are burning and your heart is pumping. Have the right frame of mind and a ‘never-say-die’ attitude but try to smile occasionally to help release tension in your face.
  2. Be Mindful – Be mindful of instructions and keep on your toes. Concentrating on how much it hurts and how much you want to quit will make you forget the next sequence or next relay move. Give your undivided attention to the instructor’s commands, and this will help distract yourself from the pain.
  3. Have Focus – Focus on your breathing and your activate your abs. Make sure you get enough oxygen to avoid passing out by breathing through tough exercises, and simultaneously, try to contract your abs to protect your back. It may seem awkward at first, but you will eventually train your diaphragm and lungs to breathe deep while activating your abs.
  4. Be Competitive – Be competitive and keep yourself in front. Believe in your abilities and don’t be shy to be the first person in the relay race line or to stand in the front of the room or even run towards the front of the jog line. Always finishing last can dampen your spirit, in the end making you more prone to giving up.
